Former NDHSAA Assistant Director Dave Carlsrud receives NDIAAA Distinguished Service Award

NDIAAA/NDHSAA NEWS RELEASE (APRIL 4, 2023):

FARGO – Dave Carlsrud, a former Assistant Director at the North Dakota High School Activities Association, received the North Dakota Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (NDIAAA) Distinguished Service Award during the NDIAAA Spring Conference Hall of Fame Banquet held on Sunday, April 2 at the Ramada Hotel in Fargo.

Carlsrud’s contributions to interscholastic high school sports and activities in North Dakota are numerous.

Carlsrud administered rules clinics and was responsible for boys basketball, football, baseball, boys and girls golf, wrestling, boys and girls ice hockey and boys and girls soccer. He also administered officiating protests, sanctions, rule interpretations, co-ops and served as the North Dakota Officials Association (NDOA) secretary.

A graduate of Breckenridge High School, North Dakota State College of Science and Moorhead State University in Minnesota, he worked in the insurance industry for three years and the sporting goods industry for 15 years prior to joining the NDHSAA. He began his career as a high school teacher and coach in the sports of football, wrestling, basketball and track.

Carlsrud began officiating football, basketball, wrestling and baseball in 1964. He was an officials association assignment secretary off and on for 22 years.

At the high school level, Carlsrud assigned officials for the Wahpeton-Breckenridge Officials Association and the Valley City Area Officials Association. At the collegiate level, Carlsrud assigned officials for the North Dakota College Athletic Conference. At the national level, he served eight years on the NFHS Wrestling Rules Committee; including four years as chair. He was a part of the NFHS Football Rules Committee for twenty-one years, the Football Rules Editorial Committee for four years and the Football Manual Committee for four years.

Carlsrud retired in 2010 after 21 years as Assistant to the Executive Secretary of the North Dakota High School Activities Association (NDHSAA). Carlsrud currently resides in Valley City, North Dakota, where he has served as mayor since 2016.

Carlsrud and his wife Sue have four grown children, Sherri (Wayne), Mike, Sarah (Bill) and Cory. They also have five grandsons, Tanner, Joseph, Nicholas, Teegan and Landon.

Carlsrud is the second individual to receive the NDIAAA Distinguished Service Award joining longtime NDHSAA colleague and fellow former Assistant Director Sheryl Solberg who was honored in 2022.
