Devils Lake AD Jason Wiberg to receive NIAAA Distinguished Service Award

INDIANAPOLIS – Jason Wiberg, CMAA, Activities Director & Assistant Principal, at Devils Lake High School, is among a group of 11 athletic administrators who have made outstanding contributions to interscholastic athletics and have been named recipients of the 2022 Bruce D. Whitehead Distinguished Service Award given by the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (NIAAA).

These individuals will be honored December 13 in Nashville, Tennessee, during the awards banquet at the 53rd annual National Athletic Directors Conference (NADC) conducted jointly by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) and the NIAAA.

The Bruce D. Whitehead Distinguished Service Award is presented annually to individuals from within the NIAAA membership in recognition of their length of service, special accomplishments, and contributions to interscholastic athletics at the local, state and national levels. Nominations are submitted by state athletic directors associations, screened by the NIAAA Awards Committee and selected by the NIAAA Board of Directors.

Jason Wiberg, CMAA, is in his 26th year in education and 21st as an Athletic Director. Wiberg has taught 3rd grade, 5th grade, been an elementary principal and assistant high school principal. He has coached girls basketball, boys basketball, volleyball, football and boys golf.  He has been the Activities Director and Assistant High School Principal for Devils Lake Public Schools since 2010.

Wiberg has been a member of the NIAAA Endowment Committee since 2016 and is currently serving as the Vice-Chair. He has served as an NDIAAA State Delegate four times and has been active in the Professional Development Academy. Wiberg helped author LTC 704-Recruit/Hire, Mentor and Remove or Retain Coaches, which he helped teach nationally for the first time at this conference.

Wiberg has been a key leader for the North Dakota Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association serving as a Board Member since 2012 and is currently the 2nd Vice-President. Since 2015 he has served as Professional Development and Certification Coordinator. He has taken over 40 LTI Courses and continues to teach these courses at the state level. He is a CAA exam administrator and continues to push Athletic Directors in North Dakota to get certified. 

Wiberg has served as the Programming Chair for the past two NDIAAA Strategic Plans. He also serves on both the NDIAAA Hall of Fame and Scholarship Committees. In 2017, he was awarded the NIAAA State Award of Merit and was the State Class “A” Athletic Director of the Year in 2019. He was selected as District AD of the Year in 2007, 2008, 2009 & 2010 as well as Region IV AD of the Year in 2008 and 2010.

Wiberg also served on the North Dakota High School Activities Association Board of Directors from 2012-2016, serving as President during the 2015-16 school year and on the North Dakota Council of Educational Leaders Board of Directors from 2012-2019.

In Wiberg’s 12 years at Devils Lake, he has managed over 90 local and region tournaments. He has overseen several facility upgrades including the addition of a second softball field, the construction of a softball storage/concessions building, resurfacing of the track, and the building of football and track locker rooms as well as a storage building for track and field. Under Wiberg’s tenure, the district has added Shooting Sports, Robotics, eSports, Junior High Baseball and Girls Wrestling.

Jason has been married to Heidi for 21 years and they have three children, Kellan (15), Tayven (13) and Aubryn (10). In his free time, Jason loves to fish, hunt and spend time with his family.
