Former Bismarck High standout Jared Spooner only ND native still standing in Frozen Four field

VALLEY CITY, N.D. –  Minnesota State University Mankato senior forward Jared Spooner, a 2014 Bismarck High School graduate, is the only North Dakota native on any of the rosters of the four remaining NCAA Division I men’s hockey teams playing in this week’s Frozen Four in Pittsburgh.

Spooner has three goals and four assists this season with the Mavericks, who defeated the University of Minnesota 4-0 in the Loveland, Colo. Regional final on March 28 to punch a ticket to the Frozen Four.

Minnesota State University Mankato plays St. Cloud State at 4 p.m. CT on Thursday, April 8 at PPG Paints Arena. The game is being televised on ESPN-2.

Spooner was a two-time North Dakota High School Coaches Association (NDHSCA) All-State player in boys hockey at Bismarck High (2013 and 2014). He totaled 64 goals, 53 assists and 117 points in his prep career with the Demons.

The highlight of his prep career came in Spooner’s senior season helping Bismarck High to the 2014 North Dakota High School Activities Association (NDHSAA) Boys Hockey State Championship. Spooner collected three goals and seven assists during the 2014 NDHSAA State Tournament earning MVP honors.

After high school, Spooner played a season with the NAHL’s Bismarck Bobcats and then two seasons with the USHL’s Green Bay Gamblers before joining Minnesota State University Mankato. 

Spooner has collected 23 goals and 49 assists in 133 career collegiate games.
