Dakota Bowl XXIV Preview

FARGO – The North Dakota High School Activities Association sponsored Dakota Bowl XXIV Football Championships are set for Friday, Nov. 11 at the Fargodome.

Championships matchups are as follows:

9:10 a.m. – Division A – Ellendale/Edgeley/Kulm vs. Des Lacs-Burlington

12:00 p.m. – 9-man – Thompson vs. New Salem-Almont/Glen Ullin

3 p.m. – Division AA – Kindred vs. Bismarck St. Mary’s

6:40 p.m. – Division AAA – Bismarck vs. Bismarck Century

All games will be televised on ABC affiliates.

 

Division A Championship Game Preview:

Ellendale/Edgeley/Kulm Thunder

Record: 9-2; No. 2 seed from Region 1
Road to Dakota Bowl: 48-22 win over defending Division A state champion Park River/Fordville-Lankin in Division A first round (10/22/16); 42-41 win over Larimore in Division A quarterfinals (10/29/16); 50-20 win over Langdon Area-Munich in Division A semifinals (11/5/16).
Dakota Bowl History: First Dakota Bowl appearance as E/E/K co-op; Edgeley/Kulm appeared in 1994 and 2004 9-man state titles winning championships both years.

Des Lacs-Burlington Lakers

Record: 8-2; No. 1 seed from Region 3
Road to Dakota Bowl: 18-14 win over Velva-Sawyer in Division A quarterfinals (10/29/16); 32-20 win over Minot Bishop Ryan in Division A semifinals (11/5/16).
Dakota Bowl History: Second overall Dakota Bowl appearance. Appeared in the 1993 Dakota Bowl (Inaugural Dakota Bowl) winning the Class B 11-man state championship game that season.

Thompson Tommies

Record: 11-0; No. 1 seed from Region 1
Road to Dakota Bowl: 66-19 win over Richland in the 9-man second round (10/22/16); 52-0 win over Napoleon/Gackle-Streeter in 9-man quarterfinals (10/29/16); 44-30 win over Bismarck Shiloh Christian in 9-man semifinals (11/5/16).
Dakota Bowl History: Making second overall Dakota Bowl appearance with the other coming 1995 (Thompson was 9-man runner up in 1995).

New Salem-Almont/Glen Ullin

Record: 10-1; No. 1 seed from Region 5
Road to Dakota Bowl: 40-12 win over Towner-Granville-Upham in 9-man second round (10/22/16); 44-12 win over St. John in 9-man quarterfinals (10/29/16); 38-14 win over North Prairie in 9-man semifinals (11/5/16).

Division AA Championship Game Preview

Kindred Vikings

Record: 9-2; No. 3 seed from East Region
Road to Dakota Bowl: 34-21 win over Beulah in Division AA quarterfinals (10/29/16); 35-29 win over Fargo Shanley in Division AA semifinals (11/5/16).
Dakota Bowl History: First Dakota Bowl appearance.

Bismarck St. Mary’s Saints

Record: 11-0; No. 1 seed from West Region
Road to Dakota Bowl: 28-6 win over Central Cass in Division AA quarterfinals (10/29/16); 28-6 win over Hillsboro/Central Valley in Division AA semifinals (11/5/16)
Dakota Bowl History: 5th overall Dakota Bowl Appearance (1994, 1995, 2013, 2014, 2016). Won state titles in 1994, 2013 and 2014.

Bismarck High Demons

Record: 9-2; No. 3 seed from West Region
Road to Dakota Bowl: 30-19 win over West Fargo Sheyenne in Division AAA quarterfinals (10/28/16); 43-38 win over Minot Division AAA semifinals (11/4/16).
Dakota Bowl History: Making 12th overall Dakota Bowl Appearance (1997, 2000, 2001, 2003, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2016). Won state titles in 2001, 2008, 2009, 2011 and 2012.

Bismarck Century Patriots

Record: 9-2; No. 2 seed from West Region
Road to Dakota Bowl: 49-27 win over Fargo South in Division AAA quarterfinals (10/28/16); 30-28 win over West Fargo in Division AAA semifinals (11/4/16).
Dakota Bowl History: Making fourth overall Dakota Bowl appearance (2011, 2012, 2015, 2016). Won a state title in 2015.
