WEST FARGO – Everything about Saturday’s NDHSAA boys soccer state championship match was “golden” for the West Fargo High Packers.

Playing in a state championship match at their home field in front of a large crowd … Golden.

Playing in ideal weather conditions for the biggest match of the 2022 season … Golden.

Junior forward Ibrahim Bangura scoring the game-winning goal with one minute, 18 seconds left to play in the second “Golden Goal” overtime period to win the state championship. … You guessed it … GOLDEN!

West Fargo High defeated defending state champions Fargo Davies 2-1 in double overtime during the 2022 NDHSAA boys soccer state championship match on Saturday, October 8 at Essentia Health Packer Stadium.

The state championship is the Packers’ fifth in program history. West Fargo High previously won state championships in 2010, 2014, 2016 and 2018.

To earn their fifth state title, the Packers had to go toe-to-toe with a formidable Fargo Davies squad that hadn’t been defeated in over two years. Entering Saturday's state championship match the Eagles sported a 35-match streak without taking a loss. The last time they had been defeated was 3-2 loss to Bismarck High in the state quarterfinals of the 2020 NDHSAA state tournament.

West Fargo High got on the board first. Senior midfielder Bernard Musafiri scored 4 minutes, 12 seconds into the match.

Davies responded quickly. At the 9:29 mark of the match, Davies senior midfielder Dylan Pritchard fired a shot on goal that was saved by West Fargo High sophomore goalkeeper Bonfas Loria, but the ball wasn’t controlled an deflected back into play where Eagles senior forward Savey Jones pounced on the opportunity getting a shot to find the back of the net.

The match remained gridlocked at 1-1 all the way to the end of regulation and a first 10-minute overtime period. It appeared as though it would remain gridlocked and the match might be destined to be decided by penalty kicks for the second year in a row.

West Fargo High had other plans. As the clock neared zeros, Packers sophomore midfielder Andrew Knudsvig rocketed a cross pass in front of the net that senior midfielder John Ngafua headed over to Bangura who booted it home past Davies goalkeeper Esteban Nunez.
