GRAND FORKS – Make it back-to-back NDHSAA boys tennis team dual state championships for Grand Forks Central.

The Knights earned the repeat by defeating their crosstown rival Grand Forks Red River 3-2 on Thursday, October 7 at Choice Health and Fitness in Grand Forks.

The state title is Central’s 11th in program history and third in the last four seasons. Central also completed an undefeated season with the victory finishing with a 18-0 record in duals. The Knights were also perfect in 2020 and are currently on a 33-dual match winning streak. Central’s last loss in a dual was October 10, 2019 in the team dual state championship match to Fargo South.

Central’s three wins in the dual with the Red River all came in singles competition. Freshmen Cole Wilber (No. 2 singles) and Ryder McDonald (No. 3 singles) got the momentum in the Knights favor winning their matches 6-0, 6-3 and 6-0, 6-0 respectively. With Red River in control of the doubles matches the pressure fell on senior Logan Sandberg at No. 1 singles.

Sandberg delivered.

The defending NDHSAA boys tennis singles state champion defeated Red River’s Espen Schneider 6-2, 6-2 to clinch the Knights’ victory.

Sandberg repeated as NDHSAA boys tennis individual singles state champion with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Shanley's Kai Pierce.

In individual doubles competition, the Grand Forks Red River combo of Espen Schneider & Saylor Kuenzel took home the state championship.
