WEST FARGO – The NDHSAA has sponsored Class A baseball since 2000 and in that 20-plus years of sponsorship no program had ever three-peated as state champions.
Until Saturday, June 3 when West Fargo Sheyenne defeated Fargo North 3-2 in the 2023 NDHSAA Class A baseball state championship game at Young Field in West Fargo capturing the program’s third straight state title.
West Fargo Sheyenne entered the state tournament as the East Region’s No. 3 seed and had a chance to make history.
Fargo North would strike first, getting a run in the top of the first inning. The Mustangs would answer the Spartans’ run with a run of their own in the bottom of the third.
An inning later is when West Fargo Sheyenne would get a big lift from its bench and take a lead it never surrendered.
In the bottom of the fourth inning sophomore Tate Herrmann came up to pinch hit and delivered a sharp single that would bring in two runs for the Mustangs.
Fargo North plated a run in the top of the seventh and had the tying run on third, but wasn’t able to drive in the tying run as West Fargo Sheyenne senior reliever Konner Entz got the final two outs for the save.
BOX SCORE: WEST FARGO SHEYENNE 3, FARGO NORTH 2
