MAPLETON, N.D. – Kindred senior girls golf standout Avery Bartels has joined the exclusive 4-time individual state medalist club.

In the history of high school girls golf, only two players have ever won four individual state medals. Former South Border standout Emily St. Aubin won four consecutive NDHSAA Class B girls golf individual medals from 2016-2019.

Bartels became the second member of the 4-timers club on Tuesday, September 26 winning individual state medalist honors at the 2023 NDHSAA Class B Girls Golf State Tournament played at Maple River Golf Club.

Bartels, a North Dakota State women's golf commit, finished the two-day tournament with a 5-under 139 to secure the final individual medal of her decorated prep golf career. Bartels also won individual medals in 2022, 2021 (Fall) and 2021 (Spring). In the 2021 Spring title – Bartels’ freshman season – she edged St. Aubin, then a senior, in individual stroke play.

Entering the final round of the 2023 tournament, Bartels held a seven-stroke lead. On Monday, Bartels shot a 2-under 70 scoring birdies on Hole 1, Hole 5, Hole 10 and Hole 11. Bartels’ dominant play continued on Tuesday as she set the tone early with a birdie on Hole 1. A bogey Hole 4 was erased with a birdie on Hole 5. Bartles bogied Hole 8 and was even-par through the first nine holes on Tuesday.

The back nine holes was where Bartels shined both days playing bogey-free golf. On Tuesday’s final nine holes, Bartels birdied Hole 12 and eagled on Hole 14 to go 3-under for the day.

Bartels won the tournament by 17 strokes. Carrington’s Kacie Rexin finished runner up scoring a 12-over 156.

In team stroke play, Oak Grove and Kindred finished tied at 673 requiring a tie-breaker, which was the Day 2 fifth golfer score, which the Grovers won to seal up the repeat as team state champions. The team state title is the Grovers’ third in program history (2023, 2022 & 2017).

Oak Grove was led by eighth grader Sylvie Brantner who finished tied for sixth place with a two day 160.
